Induction Policy for Staff/Students

RATIONALE
Newton St Cyres Primary School is committed to welcoming new Staff/Student teachers by providing a caring and supportive environment for them to work in. We feel that our small school benefits greatly from the enthusiasm and ideas generated by new members of Staff/Student teachers. In return, we wish to provide a safe environment for new Staff members and Students to develop professionally during their time with us. We aim to do this through providing a good quality induction period that includes appropriate mentoring support according to status. Back to top
Guidelines
· We aim to ensure that Experienced Teachers who are new to our school are well informed about the expectations that we have for teaching and learning at the school. Day to day running of the school is made explicit in the Staff Handbook which is available for all Staff and supply teachers. In addition, we will make permanent/temporary Staff familiar with curriculum policies and those policies that directly affect our work with children. We will make sure that open channels of communication and support are available.

· We will support NQT's by assigning an appropriate Mentor to monitor and support the continued development of the NQT during the induction year. We will provide 0.1 non-contact time on a weekly basis in order that the NQT can consolidate his/her training through further observation, or by working alongside other teachers in this school and others. The use of this time will be monitored through discussions between NQT and Mentor. Continued professional development will be based upon needs as identified in the Career Entry Profile. There will be weekly meetings with NQT/Mentor to discuss planning and the outcome of classroom observations and visits; formal review meetings will be held each term with the Headteacher.

· We will support Registered Teachers by assigning an appropriate Mentor to monitor and support professional development through observation and discussions. We will provide experience throughout the school and across all National Curriculum subjects during the period of training. We will ensure that the Registered Teacher receives adequate support in planning, teaching and assessment through discussion with class teachers, Mentor, Headteacher or Phase Advisor as relevant. Regular opportunities for external training will be sought in order to complement the practical experience gained in school. Training needs will be identified during termly review meetings with Headteacher.

· We aim to nurture Student Teachers through a successful school experience by providing good role models as practitioners. Class teachers will work closely with students to discuss schemes of work, lesson plans, teaching styles and methods of assessment and recording. Mentors will provide regular formal feedback aiming to achieve a balance of praise and critique. Targets for improvement will be updated regularly. Every effort will be made to enable students to complete their school experience assignments. All written reports will be shared with students as soon as practicable.

· Voluntary helpers are always welcome at Newton St Cyres where they will work as negotiated, always under the supervision of Class teachers. All volunteers are required to complete the Local Authority Police Checks as a precaution to safeguard the children in our school.
