Mathematics Policy

Rationale
The teaching of Mathematics is intended to help children to develop their own mathematical understanding of the world in which they live, to apply this understanding to other areas of Mathematics, the wider curriculum and to the world outside school. Mathematics teaching should foster an appreciation of the subject as a practical means of solving problems. Back to top
Purpose.
* To develop a positive attitude towards Mathematics; to increase confidence and fluency in Mathematics; to consider Mathematics as an exciting and interesting subject providing intellectual challenge and creativity.
* To develop the capacity to think logically, clearly and creatively, to record carefully and systematically.
* To develop the capability to identify relationships and patterns in number and facilitate mental calculation.
* To enable children to apply their mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding to a range of everyday practical problems.
* To create an understanding of numerical operations including estimation, approximation and the use of measure.
* To develop an understanding of shape and spatial relationships.
* To develop the knowledge and skills involved in data handling and probability.

Guidelines.
Good practice at Newton St. Cyres will be characterised by:

1. A broad and balanced mathematical curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and delivered daily through the National Numeracy Strategy.
2. A balance of approaches to teaching and learning ranging from whole class, group and individual work.
3. The provision of opportunities to choose and make use of mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding in practical activities, to solve real life problems and to investigate within mathematics itself.
4. Each child experiencing success at his or her particular level by planning for ability groups that match individual needs.
5.Opportunities to record and present work in a variety of ways.
6. Assessment which is in-built, individual and continuous, informing the next step in the child?s development. In KS2 children will be formally tested in the Autumn Term using NFER tests and in May using the end of year QCA tests.
