Library

RATIONALE
The library at NSC primary should help all pupils to develop as independent readers and learners and encourage them to become informed young people who can find and use information effectively. It will further support the PSE aim of developing their understanding of themselves and other people and make them receptive to new ideas. Back to top
OBJECTIVES
The library has been set up to meet the following objectives:

* To support the curriculum for staff and pupils
* To enable the pupils to use the library with confidence
* To help children develop ability as independent learners
* To encourage the use of the library and the enjoyment of books Back to top
GUIDELINES
* All centrally held books are electronically catalogued using the Junior Librarian database to record borrowing 
* The system provides a record of individual borrowing and a facility for book reviews and reservations
* Classes One to Three hold class libraries that provide additional books to support reading in school
* The school has a twice yearly exchange through SLS when less popular titles can be replaced 
* Classes will be timetabled for weekly class visits to encourage regular exchange of books read in class and at home
* Each class will provide direct teaching as necessary to refresh pupils? understanding of how the library is organised and how it operates
* Each class will be responsible for their pupils? use of the library; Teaching Assistants will be directed to help pupil librarians to tidy the library area after classes have used it 
* Parent Volunteers will be welcomed to assist with the efficient running of the library
* Books will be maintained in alphabetical and Dewey sequences as far as practicable
* Book Fayres are held three times a year to encourage pupils to purchase their own books from a different range of publications
* The school will continue to buy into the SLS and utilise it fully through topic loans, twice yearly exchanges, advisory visits and purchases as needed made through the bookshop
