AIMS

At Newton St Cyres Primary we aim to make entry to school a pleasant, stress free experience for children and their parents. We have a PAN of 15 per year group and will accept applications from children from our catchment or surrounding areas up to this number. We will further consider applications beyond this number provided that this does not disadvantage other pupils by making class sizes in excess of 30 children. The final decision in cases that exceed PAN rests with Devon County Council who co-ordinate admissions centrally. Where parents are unsuccessful in securing a place the arrangements for an appeal within the terms of the 1996 Education Act apply.

GUIDELINES

  • Our school operates a two-term entry system; children born between September 01 and February 28 commence school in the September preceding their fifth birthday and children born between March 01 and August 31  commence school in the January preceding their fifth birthday (rising fives).

  • Enquiries made by telephone or via the Internet are welcomed; an application pack is sent to prospective parents provided the year group of interest is not over-subscribed.

  • Parents are invited to visit the school prior to application. At this visit, they will meet with the Headteacher and any queries will be answered. The parents and children will be given the opportunity to look around the school and to see it in operation. Following this visit they are invited to complete an application form (R – Y6) or complete a Register Of Intent form for pre-school children.

  • Written confirmation is sent to acknowledge receipt of the above. In the case of Reception entrants, arrangements are made for a home visit by the class teacher and teaching assistant in the term prior to entry.

  • As highlighted in our Ofsted report (September 2004), close liaison with Newton Nippers provides well supported entry to school for children that attend this pre-school. It meets on our school site four mornings a week and this enables children to spend some time in the Reception classroom and with the Reception class teacher prior to entry.

  • Liaison with other pre-school providers is made as appropriate if we receive applications from children in other pre-school settings.

  • Baseline Assessment of Reception children is made using the Foundation Stage Profile. Attainment levels for later entrants will be accessed from their school records.

  • Class teachers welcome contact with parents at the start and end of each day so that any minor problems can be resolved quickly. This is especially relevant when children start or move schools and is actively encouraged by teachers.
