Road Safety Policy

RATIONALE
Our aim is to ensure that all children, parents, staff and visitors should be safe from road traffic accidents. Back to top
BACKGROUND
The A377 is a particularly busy main road, carrying high volumes of traffic. The school is situated on the crest of a hill, where there is poor visibility in both directions and a staggered junction. In recognition of the above, the county provides a school crossing patrol at the start and end of the school day and a reduced speed limit of 20 m.p.h. is in operation at these times. Back to top
GUIDELINES
?? The school has a School Travel Plan in place to raise awareness about road safety issues. In line with this plan, children are reminded regularly about road safety issues

? The school operates a walking bus at the end of each school day. This scheme is operated by trained volunteers who escort buses of up to sixteen children each along a designated route to the village car park. Between two and three buses operate each day according to need.

? Parents and children are asked to cross the main road under the direction of the school crossing patrol. Children must be brought into school in the morning and, at the end of the day, no child should leave the school grounds without adult supervision.

? Parents are reminded about the need to park sensibly when bringing and collecting children. They are asked to keep the bus stops clear. It is recommended that parents use the parish hall car park and share lifts, if at all possible.

? The main gates of the school premises should remain locked at adult height during the school day.

? The school incorporates road safety as part of the rolling programme of PSHE education. This is incorporated into topic work as appropriate.

? When children leave the school premises on foot, as part of an educational visit, they must be accompanied by adults on a minimum ratio of 1: 10 for key stage 1 children, and 1: 15 for key stage 2 children.

? We have periodic visits from police liaison officers and reminders about road safety are given to children during assemblies, especially whenever there is cause for concern.

Road safety incidents should be reported to the Headteacher, so that reminders can be put in place. All road traffic accidents, no matter how minor, will be reported to the police within 24 hours. Back to top
