1 Feb 2002 - A HAPPY START TO THE NEW YEAR IN SCHOOL
Everyone at school has made a really good start to the New Year, with the adults returning full of enthusiasm and the children returning eager to learn. We always enjoy this Spring Term in school - it is a term full of hope, optimism and plenty of hard work!
Our topics at the moment are favourites too. The younger children in key stage 1 are looking at houses and homes - you may have seen them looking over the architecture of the village a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, the older children in key stage 2 are studying World War 2 within the topic ?Something in the Air?. As part of this topic, they will be making a visit to Exeter Cathedral and to the Royal Albert Memorial museum later this mont. During the trip, they will be finding out more about the Exeter Blitz, and they will be experiencing what it was like to be a child in wartime Exeter.
School seems to be brimming full of extra-curricular activities at present. In addition to netball and football practice each week, we also have a chess club, a gardening club, a science club and an art club taking place. We have many children opting for music tuition also, with lessons running for keyboards, flute, guitar and trumpet. French club, with Madame Flight, is still popular too, and operating on a weekly basis. It all makes for a very full timetable!
Christmas seems like a long time ago, now, but we have plenty of fond memories. Alice in Wonderland was a huge success, and it seems that it was enjoyed by performers and audience alike. Likewise the Nativity service which was held in the church to a full congregation, and our new ?Carol Singing around Newton St Cyres? venture. Jointly, the last two resulted in raising a total of £152 for the homeless charity ?Shelter?. Everyone was very pleased that we collected so much for such a worthwhile cause. Thankyou all for your generous contributions and support.
Finally, at the start of a New Year, if you would be interested in helping out in any way at school then please get in touch. We have quite a few volunteer helpers who support in classrooms, with children?s group or practical work, computing or listening to individual children read. Others prefer to support us in other ways, for example, tidying the library or helping to look after the garden. Please let us know if you can spare some time on a regular basis and you would like to help out in any way!
