1 Jun 2001 - WORKING HARD YET HAVING FUN
The school was buzzing last month as we successfully negotiated this year?s end of Key Stage tests in classes 2 and 4. At the end of Key stage 1, the children are assessed in English and Mathematics, whilst at the end of Key Stage 2 they are assessed in English, Mathematics and Science. Other children throughout the school are tested on their progress in reading, writing and mathematics. We have a very positive approach to testing at Newton St Cyres Primary, and the children really enjoy the challenges that the tests provide. We, as teachers, simply ask that they do their best - and the children rarely let us down. Congratulations needs to go to to them all for showing such committment, enthusiasm and determination!
As always at Newton St Cyres Primary, though, we choose to play hard too, and never with as much enthusiasm as when using our giant outdoor chess and draughts pieces. Most popular are our team games, where groups of four to five children challenge each other to games whilst others watch and learn. Needless to say, our children?s skills of negotiation and co-operation are growing alongside their developing strategies, and the children really are ?learning through play?. Thanks must go to FANS, our school association, for providing this excellent resource for school.
Indeed, FANS is going from strength to strength this year, with many new social and fund raising events taking place. Those of you who visited the May Fayre at the Parish Hall would have noticed several of the new initiatives that were introduced by this year?s committee. The parents and friends of the school work hard to ensure the success of these events, and their contribution is invaluable, and much appreciated by us all.
The other highlight of the term so far was our visit to Pecorama in Beer. It was an exceptionally good trip, with the whole school taking part in a "Science of a Circus Workshop" for the day. The children were kept very busy, learning about Forces through making band-roller buggies, and learning how to ride unicycles, spin plates and do tricks with diabolos. Then, to top it all, the visit ended with a circus show featuring Gary the Clown and his assistant Suzy. Children and adults all really enjoyed the day, a tribute to all involved, and another example of our school working hard yet having fun!
