1 Aug 2001 - SAD FAREWELLS AND HEARTY WELCOMES

The last day of term saw some sad farewells as we said goodbye to our Year 6 children. Their last week was marked with a special "Leaver's Disco" on the Monday evening, as a final celebration of their time spent with us. The more formal Leaver's Assembly followed this on the Wednesday, where the children were presented with their dictionaries, certificates and awards. Once again, our school leavers are transferring to Queen Elizabeth Community College. We wish them all well in this next phase of their lives.

The end of term also saw us say farewell to a very popular member of Staff, Mark Ellis, who leaves us to take up an appointment as Deputy Headteacher at Roselands Primary School in Paignton. Mark has been a central part of Newton St Cyres Primary for four and a half years, and he will be greatly missed by children, parents and Staff. He has made a huge contribution to the school in his time here, keeping everyone amused with his non-stop good humour, leading in Mathematics and Sports and organising the older children's adventure holidays every year.

In September though, an equally lively teacher, Miss Sue Drake, will be joining us on the Staff. Sue is presently working in a school in Minehead, where she has been for the past two years since leaving Rolle College, Exmouth, where she trained. She is well known to the school, since she completed her final teaching practice with us, and we are confident that she will settle in very quickly and become a very welcome member of the team.

However, we still have two vacancies. For some weeks now, we have been searching for two new members of Staff to help us out at lunchtimes. Both posts require people who would be able to work for one hour each day, between 12.15 and 1.15, and the posts seem extremely difficult to fill.

The first post is for a Mealtime Assistant, needed to work primarily to ensure the safety of a child with language difficulties. The other post is to help assist our excellent cook, Trish Mitchell, in the kitchen. Clearly, the hours are limiting, and so local people better fill both positions; if you know of anyone who may be interested, please do ask them to ring school for further details.
