1 Mar 2001 - SPRINGTIME AT SCHOOL!

This will be our first springtime in the Millennium Garden, and we have felt the benefit already of having an extra area of quiet space alongside the playground. The garden never ceases to surprise new visitors to the school and the children really appreciate the new facility. Within the next few weeks, we hope to plant a wetland garden within the wishing well, thanks to the help of a Newton Wonder reader who volunteered his services following last month's article. We are grateful for his help, and for the contributions made by all volunteers who visit our school on a regular basis.

Our next major outdoor project is to develop an outdoor activities area for the youngest children in our school. We plan to fence off and develop a safe area of land just outside classes one and two, and to dedicate this for structured play activities. We believe that young children benefit greatly from this kind of experiential learning, but at the moment we are very limited by lack of space, so the Early Years Staff are keen to see this project underway as soon as possible. Watch this space!

Later this month on 28 March we will be joining some of the schools in the Crediton area for an evening of performing Arts at the lower school site of Queen Elizabeth High School. Our contribution will have an african theme this year, based upon our work on the Gambia and our key stage 2 theme this term, the "Circle of Life". This is the second year that the event has been organised by members of the Crediton Rotary Club; last year it proved to be a great success, with a capacity audience, so we are looking forward to another good evening.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to apologise to the neighbours around the school for any disruption that is caused at the start and the end of each school day. Access to our school is a real problem, with parents needing to bring their children into school for safety reasons, often accompanied by toddlers and babies. This makes it difficult for some of them to walk up from the Parish car park, although many of our parents do choose this option, using school path. May I re-assure everyone that the governors are still actively seeking permission from Mid-Devon District Council for additional car parking. This has been ongoing for over a year now. Please write to them, outlining your situation, in support of our application. In the meantime, we are genuinely sorry for the inconvenience caused.
