1 Jul 2001 - SUMMERTIME AT SCHOOL

As we approach the end of the academic year, school is the place to be. The application and behaviour of the children this year is exemplary, making the education of the whole child a really viable option, and at Newton St Cyres, we never miss an opportunity!

Hopefully, foot and mouth permitting, our oldest children will have just returned from residential camp up on Exmoor. We plan residential trips each year, so that the children can have experience of the full range of outdoor education activities, and also gain from the social experience of living together away from the comforts of home. All the children have signed up to go this year, so it should be a lot of fun.

Meanwhile, back at school, the children can be seen splashing around in our outdoor pool each afternoon, enjoying the cool waters. For some it is an exciting time as they gain the confidence to swim for the first time, whilst for others it is a chance to improve their strokes - facing up to the challenge of those that they find more difficult.

All the children have the opportunity to swim two or three times a week, weather permitting, and this really makes a difference to their confidence. We are lucky to have the support of a number of volunteers who come in to supervise and assist with changing the younger children, and a few brave adults who actually immerse themselves in the water to reassure those that need support. We are grateful to them all, and also to Mr and Mrs Tremlett for their vigilance in monitoring the safety of the pool each day.

During the week beginning 9 July, we will be holding an Expressive and Creative arts week across the school. We have decided to devote the entire week to celebrating the aesthetics of life, with a particular focus on Colours at Key Stage 1 and Environmental issues at Key Stage 2. The teachers will be joined during the week by visiting teachers, and we plan to produce an afternoon?s entertainment set upon our open air "stage" adjacent to the Millennium Garden. This will be the first time that we have performed "al fresco" and we are really excited at the prospect of this kind of summer show. Please come along and join us for what promises to be an exciting venture.
