1 Apr 2001 - NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR NEWTON ST CYRES PRIMARY
It's not every day that you receive unexpected news from the Department for Education and Employment, but that was the case for us last month when we found out that we had won a nationally recognised School Achievement Award. The awards are given to schools who have substantially improved their results between 1997 and 2000, to celebrate the hard work and dedication of their teaching staff. Needless to say, we were all 'thrilled to bits'schools receive so much negative press that it is good to be congratulated on the things that we are doing right!
But whilst the children and staff work very hard here to make sure that the basic skills are covered, we never do this at the expense of educating the whole child. We really do believe that the physical, social and emotional development of our pupils is equally as important and so we make sure that all these aspects are well served too.
That was one of the reasons why we joined in with the spirit of fun during Comic Relief day. Children were invited to come into school wearing something red that day, and some were even brave enough to say 'Pants to Poverty', daring to display their underwear for all to see! At the end of the day we all enjoyed red nose day refreshments, raising in total £112.76 for the very worthwhile cause.
Now, this week, we find ourselves facing an 'Easter Eggmobile Challenge' the finals of which will be held in the school hall on Thursday 5 April at 2.30. Children have been asked to make a buggy that will transport a decorated hard boiled egg, in order to win chocolate Easter egg prizes. Family and friends have been invited in to watch the final races and cheer on the successful machines as they cross the finishing line. It all sounds like Eggstemely good fun, and we anticipate an Eggciting time to be had by all! As always, you are all most welcome to come and join in the fun.
Have an enjoyable Easter.
