1 Jun 2002 - GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS UP AT THE SCHOOL
The last six weeks has seen a lot of nostalgia at Newton St Cyres Primary. All of the children in Key Stage 2 have been playing the part of detectives, searching out facts and memories from the last fifty years. The project has been a lot of fun, and it has certainly captured the children's imaginations.
Each week has been spent focussing upon a different decade, from the fifties right up to the present day. Every attempt possible has been made to find first hand sources of information. Friends, family and staff have been interviewed about key decades of their life, and the children have been able to piece together how everyday life has changed during the Queen's reign.
We have also been looking at important events that have happened in the news across this time, as well as learning some of the popular songs and dances from each era, and finding out about the many changes in fashion. All this learning will be put to good use when we end the project with a big Golden Jubilee celebration party on the last day before half term.
Weather permitting, we are planning to have a whole school "street party" on our field during the afternoon. This will be preceded by some family entertainment in the form of a concert for family and friends. The children in Key Stage 1 are planning a re-enactment of the Coronation ceremony, and are very excited at the prospects of dressing up as royalty! This will be followed by a pageant of song and dance from the children in Key Stage 2. Each year group will be dressing up in the fashions of the last fifty years, and presenting one or two of the songs and dances from each decade.
The Coronation and Jubilee Concert will begin at 2.00, hopefully on our open-air stage, and everyone is invited. As always, we welcome our friends from the village, so if you are free, then please come along and join us for a trip down memory lane.
