1 Jul 2002 - A FULL AND WELL BALANCED CURRICULUM AT NSC PRIMARY

The Summer Term has been really rewarding to date, with the whole school community working together to prepare our children for the events of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. We were particularly lucky with the fine weather, meaning that, at last, we got to use our open-air stage for a complete public event! The day was even better than could be expected; the youngest children's re-enactment of the Coronation ceremony was a real picture, whilst Key Stage Two sang and danced their hearts out to a selection of ten different songs from the past fifty years. An excellent afternoon, topped by a lovely "Party in the Field" to finish off the day.

Looking forward to the rest of term, we have an intensive programme of activities. The eldest children in the school are eagerly awaiting their residential visit, which is to Pixies Holt on Dartmoor this year. This is the first time that we have used this centre for our outdoor education week, so we are really looking forward to exploring the area fully. During the week, the children will have the opportunity to try a little Archery, and also to experience the thrill and challenge of Caving. Needless to say, they are getting very excited indeed.

Back in school, we are looking forward to having a great time during Science Week, when we will have many different activities taking place. We will have sessions led by visiting scientists, as well as lots of practical work for the children to do. One project planned for that week will be the building of a cob-style shelter as part of our early years outdoor classroom development. The work will be carried out with the children, under the guidance of two environmentalists; it promises to be quite messy, but very memorable for all those involved!

Finally, it was excellent news to hear that Newton St Cyres Primary has been selected to receive a School Achievement Award for the second year running. The award is given for notable improvement in overall results, or for outstanding achievement with a particular year group. We have now been successful in both of these categories on different occasions, proving that a full and well-balanced curriculum in the school really is helping to raise standards and move every child towards their personal best.
