1 Nov 2002 - A BRILLIANT START TO THE AUTUMN TERM IN SCHOOL

Newton St Cyres Primary has been really buzzing with excitement at the start of this new academic year. The children and Staff are thrilled to bits with all the improvements that have been made to the school buildings, and the extra space has enabled us to achieve so much more.

The children are universally keen and enthusiastic about their school lives, making teaching them a real pleasure. They appreciate the need to attain the basic skills in Literacy and Numeracy, and enjoy the journey with positive attitudes. Equally, they are keen to experience the fun of the much wider curriculum - which they do in abundance! Already this term, we have welcomed the exceptionally talented Theatre Alibi, who made a big impression with their new storytelling improvisation "Teapot", as well as a very entertaining performance by an ensemble from Devon Music. The whole school enjoyed both shows.

Sports are also featuring highly on the curriculum, with football and netball at the fore this term. We have now played our first inter-school matches and, at the time of writing, we are looking forward to the area tournament held at QECC, where the teams have the opportunity to play all the other primary schools in the Crediton Academic Council.

Several visits have been organised to support the topics being taught this half term. Key Stage One children enjoyed a trip to Sainsbury's, where they gained an insight into the organisation of a large food store. Meanwhile Key Stage Two children, who have been working on a rivers topic, made a visit to Exmoor with the rangers, in search of the source of the River Exe. In addition, Class four have had the opportunity to take a boat trip along the Exe estuary under the guidance of members of the RSPB, where they were lucky enough to glimpse many species of wildlife, including four early avocets and a grey seal!

Back in school, early October saw another lovely Harvest Festival, with the children singing better than ever and a generous display of harvest baskets for distribution to the sick and elderly. The children gained real pleasure from being in a position to "make someone's day" as they delivered the harvest gifts, and we know from the kind notes of thanks received that the baskets were warmly appreciated by the members of our wider community.

Looking forward to the second half-term, plans are already underway for our Christmas pantomime, Cinderella, to be held in the village hall, and our Christmas Nativity "Off to Bethlehem" which will be sung in the church. We do hope you will be able to join us for them both!
