1 Apr 2003 - ENJOYING SPRINGTIME AT SCHOOL

Spring is certainly springing at Newton St Cyres Primary at the moment. The bulbs in the Millennium Garden are in full bloom and it is looking as pretty as a picture. There is a very spring like feel to the activities in school too. Everyone is looking forward to this year's Spring Concert and already it promises to be as good as last year.

With many children learning musical instruments in school, the Spring Concert allows us to showcase some of this individual school talent. It provides our young musicians with an opportunity to perform to a greater audience, and our best vocalists are given the stage to sing solos or with others in small groups. This year we will have the benefit of our new amplification system, so even some of the smaller voices will be able to perform. In addition, each class will take part with a spring song or two - and our youngest children will have the chance to make their "Spring Chicken" debut!

What will make the event particularly special this year is that we are combining it with a professional Art Exhibition. During the past few weeks, every child in the school has created their own personal masterpiece based around a springtime theme. The children's work has been taken away and framed commercially, and, on the day of the concert, it will be presented as an exhibition for everyone to see. After the exhibition, parents will be given the opportunity to purchase their child's work if they so wish, although there will be no obligation to do so.

Our school association, FANS, will be running two Easter competitions this year. The younger children in key stage one will be having an Easter Bonnet competition, with a parade at the start of the concert, whilst the key stage two children will be encouraged to create Easter Gardens in saucers, plates or trays. FANS will be providing small prizes for each entrant and for the winners in each year group and there will be an Easter raffle to add to the fun.

If you feel like a walk up to school to share our Easter celebrations, then please do. The events are planned for Wednesday 09 April, with the Art Exhibition open all day and the Spring Concert beginning at 2.15 in the hall. We look forward to seeing you.
