1 Mar 2003 - HEALTHY CHILDREN AT NSC PRIMARY

I have always been impressed by the level of health and fitness displayed by the children at our school but this year we are working to make things even better. Since early in the Spring Term, we have become a Healthy Eating School, with healthier options on the school dinner menus and a ban on crisps and chocolate in packed lunch boxes and at snack time. Many children are trying out new alternatives, with dried and fresh fruits, and pasta salads being amongst the favourites and the consequent reduction in litter has been notable. Parents have been fantastic in taking up the challenge to find healthier options for their children's treats and it is really appreciated by the young consumers!

To complement such healthy diets, we are turning our attention to encouraging more exercise this month, starting with a skipping workshop during the first week back after half-term. Skipping provides a brilliant opportunity for children of all ages and abilities to have fun as they exercise their hearts, so we are really looking forward to learning some new games and routines. The workshop will take place on Wednesday 05 March, with a group of children providing a demonstration for parents and children at 2.30, so that everyone can find out more.

Just one week later, we will be taking a group of children to represent our school at the Area Swimming Gala, held at Crediton Baths. This annual event is always well attended by representatives from all the local primary schools, and provides a good opportunity for our swimmers to take part in competition racing. Last year we improved on our personal best, being placed sixth out of twelve schools, so this year we are keen to do even better.

Indeed, it's looking to be a busy half term coming up. Classes three and four start their new topic on the Ancient Greeks with a visit from our favourite storyteller, Clive Pig. He will be entertaining the whole school with his performance of Gods, Heroes and Monsters and the older children will follow this with a session of improvisation. Then, just a few weeks later, we will be playing our part to raise money for Comic Relief. The "Bad Hair Day" red noses have arrived in school already. They will be available from reception at just £1 each - you are welcome to come in and buy yours in preparation for the big day!
