1 Feb 2003 - A NEW YEAR BEGINS AT NEWTON ST CYRES PRIMARY

Here at school, everyone has made an excellent start to the New Year, with New Year?s resolutions abounding and plenty of work being done. The children have come back with boundless enthusiasm and what a welcome back they had! We may not have got a white Christmas, but our first week of term was definitely one to remember, with snow on the field and ice on the pond for the duration. The children loved it ? and with snow such a rarity down south, why not?

It certainly made the first day at school special for our new reception children. With an unprecedented intake, January saw us welcome nine new four year olds into Class One. Miss Couch has been delighted with the way that they have settled into school so quickly, saying that they are a pleasure to teach. This term, class one also has the benefit of a final teaching practice student, Miss Riddler, so the new children are being well looked after.

Class Two has seen some changes also, with several new children moving up from Class One after Christmas. The Key Stage One topic this term is one of the teacher?s favourites, a story based project entitled ?Once Upon A Time?. It is a real pleasure to teach through some of the fairy tale classics, and I know that the children benefit from the opportunities it provides for links with the past and our traditional stories.

Classes Three and Four have also made a very positive start to the New Year, with their humanities and creative focus being based around the country of India. Over the first half term they will not only be looking at the physical geography associated with this topic, but also the cultural and social aspects of life on the sub-continent. To celebrate, the half term will end with an ?Indian Day? in school, when the children will be invited to wear Indian dress and partake in Indian food for lunch ? accompanied by traditional Indian music, of course - and Class 4 will entertain with a special Indian assembly.

Finally, if you are able to get into Exeter before February 08, do pop into the main gallery at the Royal Albert Museum to have a look at the ?Love Labour and Loss? school?s exhibition. Our Class Four Art group, under the direction of Miss Drake, has produced a lot of the watercolours on display there, including our very own collaborative masterpiece. It is well worth a visit!
