1 Feb 2004 - A POSITIVE START TO THE NEW YEAR IN SCHOOL
It has been a pleasure to be in school during these first few weeks of the New Year. The children have all come back rested and relaxed after the Christmas break and as keen to work hard and do well as ever. We always like to think of this term as the time when the children make the biggest leaps in their learning ? it is a very settled period in school and a time when we can capitalise on all the excellent New Year?s Resolutions that have been made!
Our youngest children in Class One have been joined by four new reception children who have settled very quickly into their new environment. The Key Stage One topic this term is Home Sweet Home, which will include some exploratory walks into the village to look at the different types of housing. Meanwhile, Key Stage Two starts the year with a topic about Weather, which looks at how our lives are affected by the variety of weather patterns around.
Our spring charity collection this year is for the NCH for Action, a worthwhile cause which focuses the children?s minds and energies towards helping those children who are less fortunate than themselves. It never ceases to amaze just how generous people are when we raise monies like this; you may be interested to know that our Christmas collection for Cancer Research UK brought in £168.72 in total from our carol singing and church donations following the Nativity service. Thank you to everyone who helped in this fund raising, especially the good folk who joined us with the singing and the Bingo supporters who allowed us to entertain them!
Finally, you are probably aware that many people in the village and surrounding areas are keen to get Broadband connections to the Internet. At school, too, we would find it most beneficial as it is impossible to maximise use of the Internet due to our limited level of connection through the phone lines. I have been informed that if sufficient people register an interest in having a Broadband connection, then it will happen in Newton St Cyres; could I ask you therefore to register your interest on-line if at all possible? In order to help with the process, we will be opening our ICT suite to the community so that registrations can take place on the afternoon of Tuesday 10 February, from 2.45 ? 3.45 so if you prefer some guidance and/or support then please come along to school for that session.
