1 Apr 2004 - A BUSY SPRING TERM AT NSC PRIMARY SCHOOL

It seems that there is never a dull moment at Newton St Cyres Primary School ? for certain we never have a chance to get bored anyway! This Spring Term has been as varied as ever with a whole host of visits and visitors at the school, all of which really bring the curriculum to life.

Last month saw the whole of Key Stage Two on a visit to the planetarium in Sidmouth as part of their Earth and Space topic. Since a journey into space was out of the question, a trip to the planetarium proved to be the next best thing, with an opportunity to see some of the most powerful telescopes in the world and also to experience an excellent simulation of the night sky. Then, just two weeks later, we took the top half of the school to Torquay for a special matinee performance of the Nutcracker, performed by a Russian touring ballet company. It was a tremendous experience, involving 120 musicians and dancers. An event not to be missed!

Back in school, our Book Week was a real success this year, with each class choosing to do work relating to a particular book. Classes One and Four both had a lot of fun doing work arising from the Harry Potter stories, with plenty of magic and unusual happenings taking place. By contrast, Class Two centred their work around a folk tale from Kenya, whilst Class Three had a science fiction based book week. In addition to this, each class had visits from local illustrators Dan and Heidi Howarth and Pat Finch ran our most successful Book Fayre ever with record sales.

Also in school last month, we had a visit from Piers Le Cheminant from the Air Ambulance Service, who spoke to both Key Stages about the important work that the charity carries out. Then, on a sporting front, each class enjoyed the expertise of a representative from South West Soccer, who spent a full day in school teaching football skills to children from each age group.

Our last event of the term, though, will be our Words and Music Show, when our vocalists and instrumentalists will show off their talents to the school and wider audience. The concert will be held on the last day of term, starting at 2.00 in the school hall, and is open to all friends and family. Please come along and join us for it if you can. A Happy Easter to you all!
