1 Feb 2005 - A GREAT NEW YEAR BEGINS AT SCHOOL

Here at NSC Primary, everyone has made a good start to the New Year, with New Year?s resolutions abounding and plenty of excellent work being done. The children have come back with boundless enthusiasm and very positive attitudes after the winter break making it a pleasure to teach every one of them!

January saw us welcome seven new four year olds into Class One. Miss Couch has been delighted with the way that they have settled into school so quickly, and they have made a really fine start. Class Two has seen some changes also, with several new children moving up from Class One after Christmas. This term, class two has the benefit of a final teaching practice student, Miss Swann, who joins Mrs Nicholls and Mrs Birdwood during the Spring Term.

The Key Stage One topic is one of their favourites, a story based project entitled ?Once Upon A Time?. It is a real pleasure to teach through some of the fairy tale classics, and I know that the children benefit from the opportunities provided by links with the past and our traditional stories.

Classes Three and Four have also made a very positive start to the New Year, with their humanities and creative focus being based around the African country of the Gambia.
This topic is another favourite amongst the Staff, who love the cross curricular approach that it affords. We have a second final teaching practice student, Mr Webster, working with Mr Payne and the oldest children in the school.

February marks the first anniversary of our walking bus scheme at school. To date, we have the largest uptake of children on walking buses in the whole of Devon. Our four buses a day are often commented on by locals and visitors alike ? they are setting a fine example to other schools ? and the health and social benefits for the children are terrific. In addition to this, the buses have done so much to alleviate the traffic and parking congestion around the school at home time; so much so that it is difficult to imagine life without them. Congratulations, therefore, to the fantastic band of parental volunteers who make it all possible and long may it continue!
