1 Mar 2005 - IT'S MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC AT NSC PRIMARY SCHOOL

We've always enjoyed our music at NSC primary but this term we have made it a real focus of our education in school. For some time, the Staff have been developing their own musical talents and now the children are really gaining the benefits.

The children in Key Stage One have been enjoying an emphasis on singing right across the curriculum ? storytelling through song and consolidating their mathematical knowledge, for example. Even the youngest children are learning about simple pitch relationships and how to create rhythms, working together to make their own compositions using non-tuned percussion.

These preliminary introductions raise awareness and prepare children ready for the more formal forms of notation that are introduced in Key Stage Two. Here, all children start to learn to play tuned musical instruments; every child in Class Three is learning to play recorder whilst those in class four are having weekly guitar lessons with their teacher.

Both Mrs Harris and Mr Payne are thrilled with the children?s very good progress with these instruments. Children are feeling a real sense of achievement as they master the accompaniment of songs and play tunes in harmony with each other. It is really exciting to watch and surprisingly peasant to listen to!

In addition to these class music lessons we benefit from having some excellent peripatetic music teachers that visit the school. Andrew Daldorph teaches piano, keyboard and trumpet; Tina Guthrie teaches flute, piano and voice and Stuart Toms teaches guitar. All three add their own special inputs to our musical events, sharing their talents unreservedly when we prepare to perform!

This month sees us showcase the many talented children that we have currently in the school. On Tuesday 22 March we will be holding our Easter Spring Concert. This annual event allows our soloists and small groups to perform to an extended audience of parents, grandparents and friends and can be quite awe inspiring for the young musicians. Nevertheless they love to rise to the challenge and we never have a shortage of children keen to take part.

As well as this, each class takes the opportunity to sing one or two of their favourite songs of the moment and we complete the show with a dance or two, which is always a challenge due to the restrictions of space in the school hall! If you would like to join us for this concert, you will be very welcome; doors open at 1.45 for a 2.00 start. I am sure that the children will be pleased to see you if you are able to be with us. Happy Easter to you all!
