1 Jul 2005 - SUMMERTIME AT NSC PRIMARY

As we approach the end of the academic year, NSC primary school is definitely the place to be! Racing along towards the last half term at school, the children will be seen splashing around in our outdoor pool each afternoon, enjoying the cool waters during the predicted heat-wave. For some it will be an exciting time as they gain sufficient confidence to swim unaided for the first time, whilst for others it will be a chance to improve their strokes ? and to face up to the challenge of those that they find more difficult.

All the children have the opportunity to swim two or three times a week, weather permitting, and this really makes a difference to their confidence. We are lucky to have the support of a number of volunteers who come in to supervise and assist with changing the younger children, and a few brave adults who actually immerse themselves in the water to reassure those that need their support. We are grateful to them all - and also to Mr and Mrs Tremlett for their vigilance in monitoring the safety of the pool each day.

The older children in years 4, 5 and 6 are also looking forward to this year?s residential visit to the Dartmoor Training Centre during the first week of July. We plan residential trips each year so that the children can experience the full range of outdoor education activities, and gain from the social experience of living together away from the comforts of home. This year they will be experiencing the fun of Archery, Orienteering, Caving, Problem Solving, Moorland Walking and Climbing all of which will encourage team building and help to develop social skills.

Later in the term, on the afternoon of Tuesday 12 July, we have our school Sports Day. To make the event really special, the school association, FANS, have organised a BBQ and a Silent Auction so I am certain that the event will be one to enjoy! The afternoon will be the association?s main fund raising event of the summer term, and I am sure that they are hoping for a big turnout! Everyone is welcome so if you would like to join us, do come along. The athletics and race events will start at around 1.30 on the school field and the BBQ and Silent Auction will take place at the end of the school day.
