1 Oct 2005 - ANOTHER BRILLIANT START TO THE AUTUMN TERM AT NSC PRIMARY

First month back into the new term and Newton St Cyres Primary is buzzing with excitement! The children and Staff are thrilled to bits with our brand new teaching space, the Starlight Room, which has been used already for music, dance and drama across the school. The room is really perfect for these expressive arts subjects, providing an attractive and creative environment to work in. It has also provided a much needed additional teaching space for individuals and small groups, so adding to the scope of what we can achieve. We all feel very fortunate!

The children are pretty excited also about our new sporting acquisition ? two basketball nets which we were lucky enough to get through the Sainsburys school sports voucher scheme. Thank you to everyone who helped in their collection! The autumn is always a really sporty term, so in addition to the basketball we will be busy with football, netball and tag-rugby. We will be playing our first inter-school matches soon and we are looking forward to the area tournament which will be held at QECC later this month. In this, our teams have the opportunity to play all the other primary schools in the Crediton Learning Community and the children always gain a lot from this experience. We have not won yet, but we live in hope!

As for the rest of the curriculum, several visits have been organised to support the topics being taught this half term. The older children, who are studying the Victorians as part of their integrated history topic, are going on a visit to Morwellham Quay in Cornwall. The trip is always a favourite, with the children getting the opportunity to dress up in costumes and try their hand at some of the chores and trades of the times. It is a real opportunity to step back in time and experience life as it would have been lived one and a half centuries ago ? including a trip down the tin mine on a narrow gauge track!

Then, later this month, we have booked our annual whole school trip to the cinema for National Schools Film Week. This year we are going to see Lemony Snickett at the Exeter Picture House which sounds quite different but a lot of fun. Top priority at the moment though, is our forthcoming Harvest Festival, which all the children take part in. Once again, we have managed to find some new songs to entertain parents and friends with, so we are looking forward to a good celebration in school.

As I am sure you will know by now, all villagers and friends are welcome to join parents for this event. If you would like to come along, the celebration will begin at 10.00 on Friday 07 October and last for about an hour. Afterwards, the older children will spend the afternoon making up and delivering harvest baskets for our friends in the community so do tell us if you know of any folk who may like to receive such a gift.
