1 Nov 2005 - WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS (AT LAST)!
Here at Newton St Cyres Primary, we are still celebrating the outstanding victory of our ?A? seven-a-side football team at the recent area schools football tournament. In all the years that the competition has been running our best ever previous showing had been to reach the semi-finals ? but not this year! After beating off some stiff competition from the other larger primary schools, we not only made it to the finals but beat the mighty Landscore school in order to win the tournament and bring home the shield!
You can imagine the excitement when the children returned back to school! Lavish praise was pressed upon their team coach Kevin Payne and the whole of the school shared the glory of the squad. The captain, Edward Leyland-Simpson, was over the moon, as was our top goal scorer, Sam Gallagher. We listened to the full match report in our morning assembly next day and heard how everyone had contributed well in each of the series of matches. Finally, each member of the team was presented with a rather special celebration photo to remind them of their great sporting achievement; it will be a moment to recall for many years to come!
Now, as we begin the second half of the Autumn term, we have plenty of other things to look forward to. On the very first day back we have our family Halloween Disco, organised by our school association, FANS. We are really lucky in having a committed body of parents who work so hard to make a success of such events; everybody plays their part ? making bookings, preparing food, putting up decorations and taking souvenir photographs. The association also plays a big fund raising role at school; their current project will see the expansion of our trim trail around the perimeter of the field ? an expensive undertaking which would go way beyond the monies available in the regular school budget!
Then, later in the month, we have booked a visit from the Working Space Theatre Company who are touring the area with a performance of a Christmas Carol. This play is particularly apt for our Key Stage Two children, as they have been studying the Victorians this term! It is always good for the children to see professional actors and actresses perform, especially at this time of the year when the Christmas show is looming! Speaking of which, this year we have decided to move away from the traditional pantomime in favour of something a little bit different ? at the time of writing it is still top secret, but look out full details in next months issue!
