1 Dec 2005 - THE BEST SCHOOL TERM OF THE YEAR

Staff and children at Newton St Cyres Primary school are agreed: this is definitely our favourite term of the year. With so much going on during the run up to Christmas, the problem lies in containing everyone?s enthusiasm, as we hurtle from one special event to another!

We will be heralding the countdown to Christmas at our school with a special afternoon performance of Dickens? Christmas Carol, which will be performed in our school by the Working Space Theatre Company. This small travelling theatre group is building a good reputation in the area; last year they brought us the Snow Queen which was well received so we are looking forward to another thought provoking afternoon this year.

Just one week later, on Monday 05 December at 5.15, we will be holding our own Christingle and Nativity in the village church. This year, we have chosen to tell the story through a lively new musical called ?It?s a Party?, which will be sung by the whole school, and this will be followed by a short Christingle service led by the children in Key Stage 1. As always, we welcome all those in and around the village to join us for this very special Christmas event.

Directly afterwards we plan to go Carol Singing to help raise money in aid of Cancer Research UK, ending at the Crown and Sceptre for some mince pies and mulled wine. All adults and supervised children are invited to come along with us as we sing some of the more traditional carols from door to door. Bring a torch and warm clothing if you would like to get your Christmas off to a good start!

Almost immediately afterwards, we will be turning our thoughts to our Christmas Show. This year we have decided to be pretty adventurous with our very own Old Time Music Hall, inspired by the work that the older children have been doing on the Victorians. Our afternoon performance this year will be on Wednesday 14 December starting at 2.00 in the Parish Hall. Admission for this performance is by programme, available on the door, so there is no need to obtain tickets in advance ? just put the date in your diary and come along for a trip down memory lane!

Finally, we end the year with our Christmas Lunch and Christmas parties during the last few days of term. Can?t be bad! On behalf of all the Staff and children at the school, may I take this opportunity to wish the readers of the Newton Wonder a very enjoyable Christmas and a Happy New Year.
