1 Feb 2006 - SPRING TERM NEWS FROM NEWTON ST CYRES PRIMARY
After a lovely long winter break, everyone has made a really good start to the New Year at school. The Spring Term is always a calm and settled term, where we see high levels of concentration and some outstanding progress being made from all of our pupils. Once again, the children have come back with plenty of enthusiasm making it a pleasure to teach them. We have all made our New Year?s Resolutions and I feel that this year could be one of our best ever!
January saw us welcome six new children into school. Miss Couch has been delighted with the way that the new reception children have settled so quickly, and they have made a really fine start. This term, class one has the benefit of a final teaching practice student, Miss Roberts, who joined us in January and stays until the end of March. We also have a second final teaching practice student in school, Miss Clifford, and she has been working with Mrs Harris in Class Three. We really enjoy being able to offer trainee teachers the opportunity to carry out their school experience with us and like to think that we offer a positive and rich environment for them to learn in.
The Key Stage One topic is Home Sweet Home, which is why you may have seen our youngest children walking around the village, studying the geography of our local area. The topic also looks to see how things have changed over the years, comparing homes in the past and now and finding out about the different kinds of materials that have been used at different times.
Our Key Stage Two topic is based around the events of World War Two ? again, you may have seen our ?evacuees? making their way to the train station in January as they travelled into Exeter for a wartime experience day. This topic is real favourite amongst the Staff, who love the cross curricular approach that it affords. In particular, the topic lends itself to learning through dance and drama and this seems to really inspire the children, bringing the subject to life!
Which leads me on to some really exciting news! On Saturday 11 March, we will be holding a big community event that should bring back memories for some of the older residents of Newton St Cyres and should provide a lot of fun for everyone else! Following the success of Strictly Come Dancing on TV, the NSC Parish Hall has been booked for a forties style dance night with the music of Andrew Daldorph and his Big Band Sound!
The evening will act as a major fund raiser to sponsor the London Marathon attempt by our class four teacher, Kevin Payne. Kevin will be taking part in this year?s marathon primarily to raise money for CLIC Exeter, an excellent organisation that has been supporting a girl in our school over the last year. We hope to raise lots of money with this event as well as having a great evening, so put the date in your diary if you think you may be able to join us!
