1 Apr 2006 - SPORTS MAD SPRING TERM AT NSC PRIMARY

This Spring Term has been quite a marathon! First, I would like to thank all the people in the village who came along and supported our Big Band Dance last month. The evening was a huge success, providing a good night out for everyone and raising nearly £840 profits for Kevin Payne?s Marathon Fund (in aid of CLIC Sargent). Plans are now underway to follow this at the end of the month with the NSC Children?s Collective Marathon on Friday 31 March. Basically, this is how it will work! The children have been gathering up sponsorships to support their own leg of the marathon attempt and then on Friday they will be running together as a whole school, with the aim that, in total, they will achieve a 26 mile distance.

Hopefully, their enthusiasm during this collective achievement will provide Kevin with the necessary motivation to succeed in his own London Marathon attempt on 23 April and no doubt it will give the children some level of understanding as to what he is putting himself through in the name of charity. We will all be watching out for him I am sure!

On a different sports front, last month saw some of our oldest children taking part in the Area Swimming Gala, held at Lords Meadow. I don?t think I can ever remember taking such an enthusiastic team and we did really well this year too. Two swimmers, Robert and Alex, gained first places overall in their chosen races and every swimmer matched their personal bests, making us fifth overall in this local primary school tournament, which was quite an achievement for a school of our size!

Now, at the time of writing, we are keeping our fingers crossed for our champion football team?s attempt at the ESFA Football Tournament. They have got through to the South West regional finals, playing at Martock against teams from Somerset, Gloucester, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Cornwall on the weekend of the 18 March. They are travelling there with the right attitude, looking forward to taking part in such a prestigious tournament ? I will let you know if the reach the National Finals later in the year!

Away from sports though, we are still keeping up with the expressive and creative arts curriculum. Our last event of the term will be our Easter Concert, when our vocalists and instrumentalists have the opportunity to show off their talents to the school and wider community audience. The concert will be held on the 07 April starting at 10.00 in the school hall, and is open to all friends and family so please come along and join us for it if you can.

A Happy Easter to you all!
