1 Oct 2006 - A HEALTHY START TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR AT NSC PRIMARY
Whilst Jamie Oliver continues to gather momentum for his campaign to improve the nutritional content of school meals and packed lunches, we are pleased to be able to say that we are well ahead of the game at NSC Primary! It has been over three years now since we became a Healthy Eating School, with a ban on crisps and chocolate at snack time and much healthier options on the school dinner menus.
Nowadays, children are keen to enjoy a range of different alternatives, both in their packed lunch boxes and when choosing from the Fresh Start menus. Parents have been fantastic in taking up the challenge to find healthier options for their children's treats and it is really appreciated by the consumers ? we have little waste and hardly any litter now! The younger children in the school also benefit from the local fruit and veg scheme, where every child in KS1 is provided with a healthy snack free of charge at break time. The children enjoy having these additional treats and for many they provide an introduction to a wider range of eating options.
To complement such healthy diets, we continue to give our attention to encouraging more exercise whenever possible, with plenty of opportunities for PE and Sports during the school day and a good take up of extra-curricular activities. We have also been trying hard to recruit more families onto our Walking Buses of late, which after two and a half years were starting to dwindle in numbers. We currently operate one or two buses daily, each one travelling from school to the parish hall car park under the protection of our volunteer drivers and conductors.
The benefits of the Walking Buses are many, for in addition to helping ease the congestion problems around school, children are finding time to socialize, learn about road safety and have some additional exercise as they leave at the end of the day. You can?t miss the children in their fluorescent tabards so, if you are around at that time, give the buses a wave as they pass you on their way home from school!
Meanwhile, the Autumn Term has got off to an excellent start. We have had a visit from Theatre Alibi, who gave us a dramatic storytelling entitled ?How to Hug Trees?, and we are looking forward to our annual cinema trip later this month. Top priority of the moment though, is our forthcoming Harvest Festival, which all the children take part in. Once again, we have managed to find some new songs to entertain parents and friends with, so we are looking forward to another good celebration in school. As I am sure you will know by now, all villagers and friends are welcome to join parents for this event. If you would like to come along, the celebration will begin at 10.00 on Friday 06 October and it will last for about an hour. We look forward to seeing you there.
