1 Apr 2007 - KEEPING BUSY THIS SPRING AT NSC PRIMARY SCHOOL

It seems that we never get the chance to get bored at Newton St Cyres Primary School, for no matter which term it is there is always plenty happening to keep us on our toes! This Spring Term has seen a whole host of visitors and plenty of different activities going on, ensuring that we bring the basic curriculum to life in the best possible way.

Our visitors have included our Community Police Officer, who came to talk to the youngest children about his job as part of their ?People Who Help Us? topic. The classes were really keen to find out all about his work and came up with plenty of searching questions! Best of all though, was a close-up inspection of the police car and its siren, which had the children squealing with delight!

Further up the school, the oldest children enjoyed an exciting opportunity to work with a group of engineering students, exploring and making a range of bridges, then testing them to destruction. The children worked enthusiastically, rising to the challenge, and were very proud to have achieved as well as they did when the bridges were tested to destruction.

This Spring Term has seen us involved in no less than three different charity appeals ? firstly, raising money for the childrens? charity, Barnado?s by ?taking care of an egg?. The children decorated, named and then looked after a hard boiled egg for a week, collecting over £521 in sponsorship money. Next, we had a visit from Piers Le Cheminant from the Air Ambulance Service, who spoke to both Key Stages about the Helibags appeal, resulting in nearly 50 sacks being filled with good quality ?unwantables? for re-sale in their charity shops. This concept of handing on things we don?t need to someone who does, seems a brilliant way of recycling goods whilst raising funds for a worthwhile cause ? a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Our third event was probably the most fun though, as we joined the nation in support of Comic Relief. The children all paid £1 to dress up in red clothes for the day, there were lots of fun activities in class all morning and the day was made complete courtesy of refreshments at the Red Nose Café! Once again, the children loved the responsibility of organising this event and really put their minds towards raising funds to help those children who are worse off than themselves.

Bringing us up to date, the last week of term shows no signs of slowing down ? on the Monday we will be having a ?Greek Day? as a culmination of the Key Stage Two topic. It promises to be rather interesting, with the top two classes dressing in ?authentic? dress, taking part in a mini Olympics and a bit of Greek theatre, before consuming a special greek themed lunch! Then, on Thursday morning at 10.00 in the school hall, we will be enjoying our Spring concert, when we celebrate the talents of our instrumentalists and singers. This year we will be featuring the songs that we sang at the recent Rotary Club concert so it promises to be particularly adventurous! Everyone welcome, so come along and join us if you can. Happy Easter to you all!
