1 Jun 2007 - EXCELLENCE AND ENJOYMENT AT NSC PRIMARY SCHOOL

After the hard working month of May, when the excellence of the children across the school is tested quite thoroughly, we always look forward to an enjoyable end to the summer term and this year, we seem to have even more activities than usual taking place!

Our youngest children, in Key Stage One, are looking forward to sharing a special morning with the children from Newton Nippers when they experience the Really Wild Show! An experience like this is just one of the advantages of having a playgroup on site ? children gain from taking part in such activities together and, when the time comes to start school, the transition is really smooth.

Similarly, at the other end of the school in year six, the children are getting ready to move on to High School. This year, all of our children will be transferring to Queen Elizabeth?s Community College in Crediton. Quality liaison between the QECC and its feeder schools is well established; in June, we will have a visit from the Head of Year and other members of Staff and the children will spend a sampling day at their new school, as well as enjoying a literacy workshop there. Many will also be taking part in the primary schools area athletics tournament which will be held on the lower school site. The children really enjoy taking part in these regular sporting events; they enjoy the friendly competition between primaries as well as gaining familiarity with their future school environment, which gives an added bonus!

By far the most exciting thing happening this month, though, will be a long weekend at Barton Hall in South Devon. This year, the children in years four, five and six will be spending four days there, taking in around five different activities a day! This excellent sports and outdoor education site offers a wealth of experiences, each one designed to challenge personal bests and strengthen bonds through team building. Our children really appreciate the opportunity to participate in these outdoor activity residentials, and they always come back with plenty of anecdotes to recall!

Meanwhile, back in school, we are making very good progress with our steel pans ? the children have amazed us with how well they have mastered them. All of the children in Key Stage 2 have been learning how to play a selection of tunes and we are looking forward to playing to bigger audiences at summer events later this year. I hope you will be able to join us for one of them!
