1 Jul 2007 - EDUCATION FOR LIFE AT NSC PRIMARY SCHOOL
At NSC primary we believe in the education of the whole child by providing a broad and balanced curriculum that considers the physical, social, emotional and spiritual aspects of learning alongside the intellectual elements. We believe that it is important for children to be responsible for their own actions and to realise that they have many choices to make in their lives and that these choices will lead to consequences for themselves and others.
One way that we help our children to develop their personal and social skills is through our School Council, which meets each term to discuss issues that have been identified by the pupils in each class. The representatives bring discussion points to the table and are able to put forward ideas for development. Our present school council has been particularly thoughtful and constructive, suggesting many ideas that have been put into practice around the school. One of their current projects is to seek sponsorship from local business people to enable the purchase of a new netball kit for our school team. Please contact them if you know of anyone who may be able to help them with this!
Another interesting opportunity that the older children are enjoying this term is a series of weekly sessions designed to raise economic awareness. The lessons are being offered through the Young Enterprise programme and they are aimed at helping children to gain a better understanding of global trading and how this affects the well being of people in participating countries. It has been thought provoking, raising awareness about how nations are inter-related and how we all have a part to play in looking after our world.
At a more local level though, on the afternoon of Tuesday 17 July we will be having our school Sports Day. All of our friends from the village are most welcome, so if you would like to come along then please do! The athletics and race events will start at around 1.30 on the school field and be followed by a BBQ, weather permitting. This year, the entertainment will be provided by our groups of steel pans playing fresh from their performances at Westpoint Devon Schools Mix-xl. We have had such fun with these instruments this term that we will be sad to see them go! don't miss this last opportunity to hear them at school!
Then, on the following Friday, we will be taking the whole school for an exciting day trip with a difference. This year, we will be travelling to the Mill Adventure Centre at South Molton for a day of challenging outdoor education activities. What will make this really special for us is that it will be the first time that our younger children have been included in these types of activities; our older children do have many opportunities during their annual residential trips but this will be a "first" for our 5 - 8 year olds and definitely a day to remember!
